Provision Center for proton therapy selects RayStation®

RaySearch Laboratories AB has received an order for its RayStation® treatment planning system from Provision Center for Proton Therapy. This partnership with Provision represents a milestone since it is the first proton center to select RayStation® since RaySearch and IBA initiated a collaboration in the field of proton therapy earlier this year.

Provision Center for Proton Therapy is one of only 14 proton therapy centers in the United States. Opening in early 2014, the Center is part of Provision Health Alliance’s comprehensive outpatient cancer treatment campus located in Knoxville, Tennessee. The comprehensive campus at Dowell Springs is both patient and physician-friendly and is the new model for future healthcare delivery.

"The Provision Center for Proton Therapy is excited to be the one of the first proton therapy facilities in the United States to utilize RaySearch's advanced treatment planning system,” said Mary Lou DuBois, President of Provision Center for Proton Therapy. “RaySearch's innovative products, commitment to research and development, and strong collaborative approach to deliver high quality patient care perfectly aligns with our mission at Provision."

RayStation® will be implemented for clinical use at Provision Center for Proton Therapy beginning in the first quarter of 2014. This will include uniform scanning and passive scattering proton beam planning, IMRT for photons with multi-criteria optimization, as well as cutting edge technologies such as full deformable registration and adaptive re-planning. Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS) dose calculation capabilities that will allow for Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) will be introduced sometime in mid-2014.

Niek Schreuder, VP and Chief medical Physicist for Provision Center for Proton Therapy says: “The RayStation system offers a much needed improvement of the treatment planning environment for proton radiation therapy. Using the RayStation system will help us to improve our efficiency in producing highly optimized treatment plans for our patients and will offer advanced plan evaluation tools to the clinical team. We are excited to start using the system on our very first patients in January 2014.”

Marc Mlyn, President of RaySearch Americas says: “We are excited to partner with Provision Center for Proton Therapy. Their state-of-the-art treatment center represents an ideal environment in which we can work together to enable efficient and ultra-modern patient care.”

Johan Löf, CEO of RaySearch adds: “In May we entered into a collaboration with the leading proton therapy equipment supplier IBA to further refine our treatment planning solution for proton treatments delivered with IBA systems. That collaboration enables us to provide the best proton treatment planning system on the market and I can’t think of a better clinical partner than Provision to successfully implement these cutting edge technologies.”
