RaySearch Laboratories AB (publ.) announces that the Radiation Therapy Department at Columbia University Hospital recently has added several RayStation® licenses and the required hardware to support a distributed network environment and adaptive radiation therapy on their Varian and Siemens linear accelerators.
The combined technologies of deformable registration, dose accumulation and adaptive therapy are now available to the planning team which will allow them to commence using advanced planning solutions that focus on treating cancer in a more dynamic way.
Hansen Chen, Director of Technology Development and Systems Integration will be working towards an early 2014 implementation of adaptive therapy, using RayStation® to examine the progress of prescribed treatments over time, correcting delivery as needed to assure that the treatment as originally planned is successfully completed. Hansen Chen comments: “We need efficient tools like RayStation® to help us with the clinical workflow when it comes to technologies like adaptive therapy. To actually apply this type of treatment monitoring and correction takes a great deal of effort and resource planning. If done correctly, we can improve patient care without losing efficiency or increasing costs.”
“We are looking forward to working with Hansen and his organization in advancing these technologies. It is important for us to have customers who want to apply the most advanced planning techniques in their clinics. This helps everyone because their input and practical application helps us make our solutions even better”, says Marc Mlyn, President of RaySearch Americas.
Johan Löf, CEO of RaySearch, adds: “We see adaptive therapy as the next big step in radiation therapy and have worked very hard for several years to create a state-of the-art treatment planning solution with full support for adaptive therapy. The clinical implementation at Columbia is an important step in the development of this new field that will grow in importance immensely over the next few years.”
