Leading German Cancer center Selects RayStation®

RaySearch Laboratories AB has received an order for its RayStation® treatment planning system from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany.

DKFZ is the largest biomedical research institute in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers. In over 70 divisions and research groups, DKFZ’s more than 2,500 employees, of which more than 1,000 are scientists, are investigating the mechanisms of cancer, are identifying cancer risk factors and are trying to find strategies to prevent people from getting cancer. They are developing novel approaches to make tumor diagnosis more precise and treatment of cancer patients more successful.

DKFZ will use RayStation® as its treatment planning system for conventional 3D-CRT treatments, as well as more advanced treatments, such as IMRT and VMAT. One area of particular interest is treatment planning of rotational therapies for linear accelerators from Siemens, where RaySearch has developed an algorithm that will be clinically released later in 2012. The order also includes advanced tools enabling a more efficient treatment planning process, such as Multi-Criteria optimization. This highly intuitive tool lets the clinician evaluate the impact of changing different treatment priorities in real-time, which has a large potential to speed up the time-consuming treatment planning optimization process.

“RaySearch is well established as a leading provider of advanced radiation treatment planning solutions. We have been following the development of RayStation® for some for some time and it stands out as the most advanced treatment planning system on the market with a lot of unique interesting features that have the potential to improve radiation treatments as well as the treatment planning process”, says Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schlegel, Head of the Department of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology at DKFZ.

“This is our first RayStation® order from Germany and carries a lot of importance for us. DKFZ is one of the largest and most well renowned research oriented cancer centers in Europe so the fact that they have selected us for advanced treatment planning applications signifies that RayStation® is in the forefront of development”, says Johan Löf, CEO of RaySearch.
